Before installing a replacement engine, it is important to find out the cause of the defective engine block in order to prevent future damage. For example, it is possible that the engine block has had to endure heavy wear and tear due to heavily contaminated attachments. If these attachments are passed on from the old engine block, it is only a matter of time before the new replacement engine encounters the same issues as the old engine block. Bottom block
The bottom block is the heart of the engine block. Here you’ll find the rotating element, such as the crankshaft, connecting rods and the piston. The cylinder head is mounted on the bottom block by means of a head gasket for a liquid-tight seal. The bottom block also contains the cylinders in which the piston goes up and down. A distinction is made here between different types of cylinder sleeves or liners. For example, the cylinders may have been drilled into the engine block, cast or placed as separate cylinder liners. In the case of drilled or cast bottom blocks, dry cylinder liners are used, which means they do not come into direct contact with coolant. Individual cylinder liners are so-called wet cylinder liners and come into contact with coolant. Individual cylinder liners are made of thicker material in order to offer more strength and to absorb heat.
When lifting the cylinder head of an engine block with separate cylinder liners, it is important to ensure that the cylinder liners do not move. This can cause problems when reassembling the cylinder head. Individual cylinder liners can be found in the "Cylinder Sleeves" category. Sump/crankcase pan
The sump pan or crankcase pan is located underneath the engine block; it is the collection container for all the oil in the engine block. When the engine is switched off, all the oil collects in it. Almost every combustion engine is equipped with a sump pan and this is called a ‘wet-sump' lubrication system. The oil pump removes the oil from the lowest point of the sump pan to provide the engine block with oil pressure and thus lubrication. Some more exclusive sports cars have a so-called 'dry-sump' lubrication system with no sump pan installed. One of the reasons for this is the limited installation space and the G-forces in these sports cars, which could cause the oil pressure to drop with the previously mentioned 'wet-sump' lubrication system.
When a crankcase pan is defective, it is always due to damage. This could be due to driving over objects, causing the crankcase pan to leak. After all, the crankcase pan is mounted on the underside of the car and is often the car’s lowest point. The crankcase pan is sealed with a gasket on the underside of the engine block. Over time, many cars fall victim to a leaking crankcase pan because this seal fails.
Engine hardware kit
The engine hardware kit consists of a complete set of bolts, frost cups / frost plugs, spring pins, sealing plugs and, in some cases, also bearings. For the specific application of your vehicle it is advisable to check what is included in the kit so that any additional parts can be ordered separately.
Bearing cap for crankshaft bearing
The bearing cap of the main crankshaft bearing locks the crankshaft and the main bearing in the engine block.
Complete reconditioning kit
This is a complete reconditioning kit for an engine block. This usually includes: pistons, bearings, gaskets, connecting rods and bolts. More or fewer parts are included, depending on the reconditioning kit. For the specific application in your vehicle it is advisable to check what is included in the kit so that any additional parts can be ordered separately.
Bearing cap sheet
This is a reinforcement plate used in performance engine blocks. By connecting the crankshaft bearing caps, the engine block becomes stiffer and torsion in the engine block is prevented.
